Preventive Dentistry in Encinitas

Keeping your smile healthy is easier, and less costly when you prevent problems before they start. Preventive care means regular checkups, cleanings, and simple treatments that protect teeth and gums so you can avoid pain, emergencies, and bigger procedures later. Most people do best with routine dental visits about every six months, though some need them more often based on their history and gum health.

Exams & Cleanings

A routine visit at Smile Encinitas Dental Care includes a careful exam and a professional cleaning. During the exam, Dr. Deering checks your teeth, gums, bite, and any areas that may need attention. We take digital X-rays only when they’re truly helpful for diagnosis. The cleaning (also called a “prophy”) removes soft plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing can’t reach, then polishes your teeth so they feel smooth and clean. These visits help stop small issues from turning into costly emergencies and help prevent common problems like cavities.

Why Exams and Cleanings Matter

  • Plaque that sits on teeth hardens into tartar, which you can’t remove at home. A dental hygienist must remove it to protect your gums.

  • Regular exams catch concerns early, when treatment is easier and more affordable.

Gum Health

Healthy gums don’t bleed when you brush or floss. If yours do, it may be an early sign of gum disease. Plaque along the gumline can irritate the tissue and cause swelling, tenderness, and bleeding; risk can be higher with smoking, pregnancy, and diabetes. Getting checked promptly helps us treat the cause and protect your smile and overall health.

Our approach
to gums

  • Look for early signs of gingivitis and periodontitis.

  • Clean the areas that need attention and coach you on easy home habits that help gums heal.

  • Re-check at future visits to make sure the tissue stays healthy.

Fluoride / Sealants

Fluoride strengthens enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. For added protection (especially on the deep grooves of back teeth) we may recommend dental sealants. Sealants are a thin, protective coating bonded to the chewing surface to block food and bacteria. They can help prevent about 80% of cavities in back teeth for the first two years and continue to protect for years after.

Sealants are great for kids as soon as the permanent molars come in (around age 6 and again in the early teens), and some adults with deep grooves can benefit too. The process is quick and painless: clean, dry, apply a gentle gel to prepare the surface, rinse and dry, brush on the sealant, and cure with a light. You can eat and drink right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to dental questions about appointments, insurance, comfort options, and treatments.

Most people do well with visits about every six months. If you have a history of gum disease or other risks, we may suggest a custom schedule.

Kids get the most benefit, but adults with deep grooves can also be good candidates. Sealants are quick, painless, and help block decay on the chewing surfaces.

Bleeding is often an early sign of gum disease, especially when plaque gathers along the gumline. Let us check it—early care can stop it from getting worse.

It’s a short visual exam of the mouth and throat areas—no special prep needed, and it typically takes less than five minutes during your checkup.

There’s a known connection between oral health and conditions like heart disease and diabetes, among others. Keeping your mouth healthy supports your total health.
